Any patient with lower extremity swelling due to vascular issues such as chronic
venous insufficiency. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when the veins
in the legs struggle to pump blood back to the heart, leading to blood pooling in
the lower extremities. This condition can result in symptoms like swelling, pain,
skin changes, and varicose veins. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in
fluid balance and immune function. It helps to drain excess interstitial fluid from
tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. When CVI is present, the increased
venous pressure can impair lymphatic drainage, leading to:
1. Fluid Accumulation: The lymphatic system may become overwhelmed,
resulting in lymphedema (swelling due to lymph fluid buildup).
2. Inflammation: The stagnant blood flow and increased venous pressure
can cause inflammatory changes that further compromise lymphatic
function.
3. Skin Changes: Impaired lymphatic drainage can lead to skin changes,
including thickening and pigmentation, making it more susceptible to
infections.
